2010 Golf Tournament Summary

We had another fabulous day on Wednesday, June 16th with a full field of golfers and a record number of vendor sponsors – 22!  We had every tee box covered and also were delighted to have Collaborative Consulting become Boston SIM’s Premier Gold Sponsor.  Look for Collaborative at many of our 2H monthly meetings, with special posts on our new website, and offering a webinar to our members as well.  We had 10 new sponsors this year, led by new companies at the Contest Hole level: Oracle, Cognizant and Red Hat.  We also had seven other new vendor sponsors and three returning companies who increased their level of sponsorship.  For the first time ever, the total revenues from the tournament went over $100K!

We were delighted that so many members and a few guests came out to spend the whole day!  We hope that you enjoy the travel bag, Boston SIM golf shirt, a nice Boston SIM tote bag with many goodies, and lots of gifts from the vendors on the tee boxes.  The golf was lots of fun and produced some interesting scores and stories.  The Golf Trivia game received some good feedback and even a challenge.  The “team throw” was popular once again.  As always, the putting strings made for debates, decisions and disappointments.  Mulligans were at a record level!

As for team prizes:

  • 1st place and low gross in the Scramble at a record-breaking score of 57 (i.e., 14 under par) was the team of Mike Donley and David Holmes of one of our new sponsors, Savvis, Sean McRae of Thomson CompuMark, and Alan Weingarden. Thanks to Savvis for being a new sponsor with Boston SIM and congratulations on a super round including three eagles.
  • I tried to go out a winner and came real close at -13 under for second place with Josh Bruno of Teen Voices, Eric Sandman of Veroxity Technology Partners (second year of Tee Box sponsorship), and Chris Haugh of Whitridge Associates.
  • In our Mixed Division, we had another record-breaking score of 67 or 5 under par.  Congratulations to the team of Mark Clayman and Gina Murphy of another Tee Box sponsor – Navisite, along with Rich Tedeschi of Whitridge Associates and Faizeen Khandaker of Xtream IT People, Inc. who repeats in this division.
  • Coming in with 17 out of 18 Golf Trivia questions correct was the Oracle team of Tony Raftery, Mark Gordon, Stephen Brewer and Buckley Cooney.  Based on getting one of the easiest questions wrong and the fact that they got 4-5 almost impossible ones correct, I would say that they put technology to work!

Brandon Lynch of Trilogy Leasing won the Putting Contest, just missing the 50’ putt for $5,000.  We have a record 25 people make the tricky 10 foot qualifying putt.  Congratulations also to all of the other individual contest winners!

We will be able to make very significant contributions in 2010 to our outreach partners: Year Up, Common Impact, Teen Voices and Tech Boston.  Thanks to all of you for helping to make this happen and supporting the future IT workforce!  We will double our net contributions, from 2009, to these organizations this year.

Special thanks to my fundraising committee of David Lear, Michael Tulloch, Rick Farquharson, Kevin Farrar and Doug New.  As always, Bob Koskovich does yeo-person’s duty on our weekly calls and then running the Logistics team during the day of the event.  Our Chapter Administrator Kate Carroll did an excellent job again and she was ably assisted this year by Nan Jurgelewicz.   Thanks also to the day volunteers of both SIM and our sponsor companies.  We look forward to next year – save the date of June 15th for the 10th Annual Boston SIM Golf Tournament at Cyprian Keyes.

As we announced a few weeks ago, I will be ably succeeded as the Golf Chair in 2011 by Rick Farquharson.  He can be reached at richard.farquharson@comcast.net .   Thanks again for making 2010 such a tremendous success!   I have  enjoyed leading this event for the last few years.

Sincerely,

Steve King
